I’m not going to jump in the shark tank, cess pool, arena, coliseum, sanctuary of politics. But I am going to ask what the heck are we teaching our children about civility as we watch what should be an honorable moment in history bring us to taking jabs like kangaroos fighting for territory.

We need to find a way to teach our children not only about current affairs but also that power does not or should not exclude us from civility. Insensitivity, bullying, and bending the truth to the breaking point should not be the traits we aspire to for success.  Learning to debate and disagree are as important as learning to attack and fight in the right circumstances. But come on, what would your mother say ….. hmmmm…..??

That’s just my rant. For the sake of civility, come on leaders grow up in a real hurry and be leaders and watch what lessons you’ll be passing on to our children this coming Friday.

  1. I was at the dog park today, and it was a strange day at the dog park because the road to get there was closed. So it was very sparsely attended by the truly dedicated. And we were all forced to talk even more than dog owners normally do in that situation, an absolute mish-mash of random people of all creeds and ethnicities and backgrounds, hanging out picking up dog poop and talking about the football game and our furry children. I think parks, for dogs and for humans alike, remind us that the civility is out there. Just keep looking for it!

    • Thanks John, for reminding me where to look! It’s warmed up from the -34,35 we’ve been hiding from to a balmy -4 and even above freezing so while it’s now an ice rink out here Jasmine and I will head out tomorrow to the park in search of the civility you mention. I have every confidence I will find it amongst our creatures and the people who love them.

S, I find civility three times a week in that bastion of civility… HOCKEY! Okay, not REAL hockey, old timer’s hockey, but it’s real enough to us. An example from last game: just after I robbed this guy on his third breakaway to leave him shaking his head and 0 for 3, he took the time to reach down where I was sprawled to cover the puck and pat me on the head, smile, and shake his head again. I get that a lot. A pat on the head, a tap on the pads, sometimes a chuckling admission that the opposing bench is calling me bad names ’cause I’m a little lucky that night. It is still out there, even if it may only survive among the old.

    • Ah Ray, what an uplifting example and proof that civility lives….interesting that in a game like hockey where the life cycle goes from toddlers on the ice graduating to the brutality and aggression of professional hockey, back to where you are now…old timer’s hockey, the respect for your opponent is there…manifest in the pat on your head as you are sprawled in your goalie pads. Civility. Maybe there is hope for those in the other arenas we are watching. Hope.
