potato soup

The smell of potato soup wafts up from the stove as I hold the seven week old baby girl tucked to my chest, rocking back and forth to try to get her to stop crying. And shivering.  She is shivering. With my free arm, I stir and stir and stir the soup with the big broken metal spoon that I found in the cutlery drawer with a few stray spoons and forks and crumbs.  The spoon grates against the pot with each pass through the thin soup. I can’t let it burn; it’s all there is to eat in the house.

I hadn’t thought of the family for years but they came rushing back to me with all the desperation and fear and hopelessness from so long ago.  With a thick, creamy soup simmering on my stove; bacon, onions, potatoes, rich and creamy, I caught a memory as I lifted the lid to check and stir. it’s the little things making today great

Three  words shared ” heard a robin” and I smile.

This week has been a bit crazy.  I felt a little Kung Fu Panda as I suddenly had all these things to do, but the strength, wisdom ….and naps…..and cheesecake…..came through and like that fat bear, I made it through the week managing to embrace the warrior status fat bears aspire to.  Continue reading

footprint from my Buddy

As I went out to warm my car up this morning, I noticed the footprints beside the door.  About the size of a loonie (that’s a Canadian coin for those of you from afar), the prints were made when Buddy came for a sleepover the other night.

Now, I’m not a “small dog person”.  I leave the Pekingese and Yorkies to those who prefer purse dogs to sled dogs, but who knows how love works.  Continue reading

I’m waiting for Mark to shower and get ready to head to the hospital.  We will trek up to the ICU with our family who have gathered to give strength to each other and by way of prayers, osmosis or whatever you believe in, to our loved one.  Such are the twists and turns that change plans and lives in moments.  Continue reading
